US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the Geneva meeting should be seen plainly, calling it "another opportunity to talk, I wouldn't define it differently," and stressing that the discussions will revolve around "the nuclear program." Even so, he noted that diplomacy is still available.
Rubio warned that Iran is pushing forward on capabilities that Washington views as deeply destabilizing. He said that while "Iran is not enriching uranium right now," it is "trying to reach the point where it can." He also pointed to Tehran's growing military ambitions, saying "Iran has conventional weapons intended to attack America, and it is trying to obtain intercontinental ballistic missiles." He later added that Iran's refusal to address its missile pursuits is a "big, big problem."
