In his State of the Union, US President Donald Trump spoke about Gaza, noting what he described as progress in the conflict there. He said, "I ended eight wars since coming to office, including Israel versus Iran and of course the war in Gaza, which proceeds at a very low level - it's just about there." He thanked envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, as well as Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who were present for the address.
He highlighted the ceasefire he said he negotiated, stating that "every hostage - both living and dead - has been returned home." He added, "I said those last 20 are going to be tough, but we got them back." On the final recoveries, he said, "Believe it or not, Hamas worked along with Israel, and they dug, and they dug, and they dug - it's a tough thing to do, going through bodies all over... tough job. They found all 28, no one thought that was possible, but we did it."
Referring to the family of Ran Gvili, the last fallen hostage recovered, Trump recalled the mother telling him, "Sir, we have our boy back." He concluded, "What a period of time that was, but we got them all back."
Trump also addressed Iran, saying he seeks peace "wherever is possible," but "will never hesitate to confront threats to America." He mentioned last June's strikes on Iran's nuclear program and described the Iranian regime as having spent 47 years spreading "terrorism and death and hate." He cited the 2020 killing of Iranian commander Qassem Soleimani, saying, "We took out Soleimani... it had a huge impact."
Trump claimed Iran's leaders killed "at least 32,000 protesters" in recent unrest and warned that Tehran is developing "missiles that can reach the United States of America." He said his administration told Iran after last year's strikes "to make no future attempts to rebuild their weapons program, in particularly nuclear weapons, but they continue." He added, "We wiped it out but they want to start all over again and at this moment are pursuing their sinister ambitions."
He said Iran wants a deal but has not given the key assurance: "We will never have a nuclear weapon." Trump stated, "My preference is to solve this problem through diplomacy, but one thing is certain, I will never allow the world's number one sponsor of terror - which they are by far - to have a nuclear weapon. Can't let that happen." He concluded, "No nation should ever doubt America's resolve. We have the most powerful military on earth."
