EU foreign ministers and Brussels-based diplomats met with Nikolay Mladenov
By Sammy,
EU foreign ministers and Brussels-based diplomats met with Nikolay Mladenov, the director of the Board of Peace, to discuss ongoing stabilization efforts in Gaza. Mladenov, a former Bulgarian politician and UN envoy, was appointed by US President Donald Trump to oversee the reconstruction and humanitarian initiatives in the war-torn territory.
Speaking ahead of the meeting, EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas emphasized the bloc's desire to actively participate in Gaza's peace process. She noted that Mladenov briefed EU officials on both the humanitarian situation on the ground and the Board of Peace's strategic plans, which include EU involvement in stabilization and relief operations. "It was reassuring to hear that he sees the value of our contributions and is focused on improving conditions on the ground," Kallas said.
She also revealed that one EU member state blocked new sanctions targeting Israeli settlers, which the rest of the bloc had supported, though she did not identify the country. Additionally, the EU's proposal to train Palestinian police in Gaza remains pending Israeli approval.
