American outlets report Syria will see the departure of the remaining 1,000 US personnel within two months, ending Washington's military presence in the country. Assad left power in late 2024, and Damascus has since extended control across the country. Kurdish forces that previously worked with the US against ISIS have said they will join Syria's national military.
Washington has improved relations with Syria's new government and has been transferring thousands of Islamic State detainees from Syrian facilities to locations in Iraq. The US had already vacated bases like Al-Tanf and Al-Shadadi, which were used in operations against the Islamic State.
