For the first time in history, a woman will assume command of an Israeli Navy missile vessel

By Tamara,

For the first time in history, a woman will assume command of an Israeli Navy missile vessel.

The incoming commander, identified as Major R, has served in the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) for more than a decade. She previously commanded a Sa'ar 4.5 class missile ship, known as "Nirit", where she led both male and female combat personnel.

The vessel she is set to command has taken part in complex military operations, including strikes targeting the Syrian navy and operations linked to the killings of a former acting prime minister in Gaza and a senior member of Hezbollah's air unit.

In an official statement announcing her appointment, the Navy said that "the Navy, the IDF and the people of Israel are proud" of Major R and her achievements over the past decade of service.

Major R is expected to formally assume her new role tomorrow.
