The Vatican has made clear it will not take part in US President Donald Trump's "Board of Peace," with Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Holy See's secretary of state, firmly reiterating that global crises should remain under the purview of the United Nations.
"At the international level, it is above all the UN that manages these crisis situations," Parolin said, stressing that this is "one of the points on which we have insisted." He acknowledged that there are "some critical issues that should be resolved," but indicated that such matters should be addressed within the existing international system rather than through a newly created body.
The board, chaired by Trump, is scheduled to hold its first meeting on Thursday. Unveiled in January at the World Economic Forum in Davos, it was initially introduced as a mechanism to supervise the Gaza ceasefire and coordinate post-war reconstruction following the conflict between Israel and Hamas. Its mandate has since expanded to encompass a broad range of international disputes, prompting concerns in some quarters that it could function as a parallel structure to the UN. At least 19 countries have signed the founding charter so far, and governments seeking permanent membership have reportedly been asked to contribute $1 billion.
