The Pentagon has ordered the USS George H.W. Bush Carrier Strike Group to prepare for deployment to the Middle East, the Wall Street Journal reported, citing three U.S. officials. An order for the carrier to depart could come within hours, according to one official.
The George H.W. Bush is completing exercises off the coast of Virginia and could accelerate their conclusion if necessary. If deployed, it would join the USS Abraham Lincoln Carrier Strike Group, which arrived in the region in late January. Officials said the carrier could deploy within two weeks.
The officials stressed that President Trump has not yet issued a formal order to deploy a second carrier and that plans could change.
