Israeli police recently thwarted a planned ramming and stabbing attack at the Hizma checkpoint in East Jerusalem. The suspect, a 50-year-old Palestinian from Qalandiya in the West Bank, crashed his car into a roadside pole earlier this month while en route to the checkpoint. Officers who responded to the accident discovered multiple knives and army fatigues linked to a terrorist organization inside the vehicle. Authorities also noted that the car bore a forged Israeli license plate.
The man was taken in for questioning on suspicion of attempted murder, conspiracy to commit a terrorist act, and vehicle forgery. Police say he is expected to be formally indicted soon. The following day, detectives raided his home and arrested his 21-year-old son, who was found with a Hamas flag and headbands displaying the group's insignia. The son remains in custody, though officials have not disclosed whether charges will be filed against him.
