By Tamara,
This week, President Herzog has been on an official trip to Australia.
While on this trip, the President visited Chabad of Bondi, the community that was targeted during the Chanukah Massacre on Bondi Beach. The response of the local community was a large protest held in central Sydney. The President also made an address at Moriah College, a local Jewish high school, where he both took questions from pupils and made remarks stating that he is "proud of our Jewish identity, and our Zionist identity."
Anthony Albanese, Australian Prime Minister, has repeatedly defended his decision to invite the Israeli President to Australia, despite the massive number of protests surrounding Herzog's visit, with 27 being arrested at Pro-Palestinian rallies.
Albanese has faced widespread criticism from the Australian Jewish community over his lack of action after the Bondi Chanukah attack, and the increasing rates of anti-Semitism in the country.
In a joint statement earlier today from Parliament in Canberra, both President Herzog and Prime Minister Albanese highlighted the importance of fighting anti-Semitism globally and the bond between the Australian and Israeli peoples and governments.
The state visit to Australia is continuing tomorrow in Melbourne, with the President continuing to visit Jewish communities.
