Israel's Defense Ministry, the U.S. Missile Defense Agency, and Rafael Advanced Defense Systems have completed a complex series of tests on the David's Sling air defense system amid escalating tensions with Iran and the possibility of renewed military confrontation.
The tests were conducted at sea using both UAV targets and fast-moving missile targets, and were designed based on operational lessons from the 12-day war with Iran in June 2025. The ministry said the tests included "challenging scenarios in accordance with existing and developing threats."
During the 12-day war, David's Sling was employed in ways that exceeded its original design parameters. The system was primarily designed for threats at ranges of 40 to 300 km, including cruise missiles, large-caliber rockets, aircraft, and drones. However, during the conflict it successfully intercepted Iranian medium-range ballistic missiles launched from 1,000 to 1,500 km away, marking the first confirmed operational interception of a ballistic missile by the system. David's Sling served as a backup layer, intercepting missiles that evaded the Arrow system at higher altitudes. Analysts noted the system outperformed each of its specifications, successfully engaging warheads at greater distances and higher speeds than anticipated.
Moshe Patel, head of the Defense Ministry's Homa Directorate, said modifications made to David's Sling over the past two and a half years, including real-time adjustments during the war, "dramatically improved air defense capabilities." The test series "ended in complete success and enables a significant upgrade to Israel's air defense array," he said, describing it as a "technological and operational leap."
Rafael CEO Yoav Turgeman said the tests examined "new capabilities in a wide range of challenging scenarios," adding that David's Sling is "one of the best defense systems in the world."
David's Sling is the central layer in Israel's multi-layered air defense array, which includes the Arrow systems for ballistic missile interception in space, Iron Dome for short-range rockets, and the Iron Beam laser system for mortars, small rockets and drones.
