El Al has been notified by the Israel Competition Authority that the regulator intends to impose the highest fine permitted under law, alleging the airline charged excessive and unfair fares during the war period. The proposed penalty totals NIS 121 million, with any money collected set to go to the state treasury. The authority noted that the sanction is not yet final and will be decided after a formal hearing, where the airline is expected to challenge the move.
The planned action comes after an investigation in which the regulator concluded that El Al effectively controlled air travel to and from Israel from the outbreak of the war with Hamas on October 7, 2023, through the end of May 2024. According to the authority, the airline used that position to maintain unusually high ticket prices during that time.
