Iranian reformist media say authorities have detained well-known activist Ghorban Behzadian-Nejad over his role in backing a public statement condemning the government's violent response to recent protests.
According to the Shargh newspaper, the arrest is part of a wider sweep targeting public figures who endorsed the text. Among those taken into custody in recent days is filmmaker Mehdi Mahmoudian, a co-writer of the Cannes Palme d'Or-winning 2025 film _It Was Just an Accident_, who also supported the statement.
The message itself was issued by opposition leader and former prime minister Mir Hossein Mousavi, who has been under house arrest since 2011. In the statement, he urges the organization of an open and transparent referendum aimed at paving the way for a democratic transition and the creation of an inclusive national government.
