An apartment used by several Israeli bobsled athletes during their final lead-up to the Milan Cortina Winter Games was burglarized today, with passports and other belongings worth thousands of dollars stolen. Police have opened an investigation, but the team chose to continue training despite the break-in.
Driver AJ Edelman, a former Olympic skeleton competitor, writes in a series of posts on X that suitcases, equipment, shoes and passports were taken, calling the theft a "gross violation." He says the athletes returned to practice the same day and describes their response as a reflection of determination under pressure. The Israeli Olympic Committee has not immediately commented on the incident.
Edelman tells the Associated Press he is currently in Italy and was not at the apartment when the robbery occurred. He says coach Itamar Shprinz was present at the location, though it is unclear whether he directly witnessed what happened. Some team members have yet to arrive in Italy and are expected to depart their undisclosed training base later this week.
Israel will be making its first Olympic appearance in bobsled after being offered a place when Britain declined one of its quota spots for the Milan Cortina Games. As the next team in line, Israel accepted the berth once the final Olympic slots opened.
