US President Donald Trump warned Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei that he "should be very worried," in comments made during an interview with NBC News, as reports suggest attempts to find a diplomatic way out of rising US Iran tensions are falling apart and increasing the risk of military conflict.
Trump insisted that Iran is still negotiating with Washington, while also pointing to last June's US strikes on Iranian nuclear sites during the 12 day war between Iran and Israel. He again claimed the attacks destroyed Iran's nuclear program, but said Tehran has since tried rebuilding the program at other locations and warned that any renewed effort could bring another American strike.
The interview also addressed Iranian anti regime protests. The reporter noted that protesters feel betrayed after Trump had voiced support for them in the past, even as reports said thousands were killed and hundreds more faced potential executions. Trump responded that the US "does have their back," and argued that Iran is now in chaos, which he linked to American action against the regime.
