According to the IDF, an Israeli airstrike carried out earlier today in the Mawasi area of southern Gaza killed Bilal Abu Assi, who the army identified as a platoon commander in Hamas's elite Nukhba Force and a participant in the October 7, 2023, onslaught.
The military says Abu Assi played a role in the assault on Kibbutz Nir Oz, where dozens of civilians were murdered and abducted. The IDF also assesses that he was likely involved in holding the bodies of hostages in Gaza during the war, as well as helping advance attacks against Israeli troops.
The strike was carried out in response to an overnight attack in northern Gaza, during which a reservist officer was seriously wounded by terrorist gunfire. The IDF said it took steps to reduce civilian harm, including surveillance and the use of precision munitions, while acknowledging reports that the strike caused civilian casualties as well, including the death of a Red Crescent medic.
