Secretary of State Marco Rubio said talks with Iran must address "its range of ballistic missiles, sponsorship of terrorist groups around the region, its nuclear program, and the treatment of their own people."
On the format of the talks, Rubio said, "We thought we had an established forum in Türkiye," but after "conflicting reports" from Iran, the details are "still being worked through." He added, "We'll see if we can work it out," suggesting the meeting might not occur.
Officials involved in Middle East de-escalation efforts said hopes for Friday's meeting have dimmed after discussions with Iranian diplomats, the Wall Street Journal reported. They now anticipate mostly exploratory talks with limited results, as some privately view a military clash as unavoidable.
