The White House says planned talks between the United States and Iran are still expected to take place later this week, even after the latest flare-up in the Arabian Sea, where a US warplane shot down an Iranian drone that neared an American aircraft.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt told Fox News that US envoy Steve Witkoff is still set to hold discussions with Iranian officials "later this week," stressing the talks remain scheduled for now.
At the same time, Iran is reportedly pushing to reshape Friday's meeting. Axios cites sources saying Tehran wants to move the talks from Istanbul to Oman and narrow them into direct bilateral discussions with Washington, with Egypt, Oman, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey present only as observers. Channel 12 says Iran's aim is to keep negotiations focused strictly on its nuclear program, rather than expanding them to include issues such as missile production and Iran's backing of proxy terror groups. The reports come amid a continued US military buildup in the region and threats from President Donald Trump of a possible strike, with Iran warning it would respond by targeting Israel and US interests.
