Col. Avichay Adraee is set to retire after 20 years as the IDF's Arabic-language spokesperson, and the military has selected his deputy, Maj. Ella Waweya, to succeed him. A formal handover ceremony is expected to take place in the coming weeks.
Waweya, known publicly as "Captain Ella," has served in the IDF since 2013 and is considered one of the most senior Arab Muslim female officers in the army. She will be promoted to lieutenant colonel as she takes on the role.
