Israeli news reports, quoting an Israeli security official, say the Rafah Crossing between Gaza and Egypt has now resumed operations, reopening for the first time in almost a year. The crossing had been shut last March after the January 2025 ceasefire collapsed.
The reopening follows preparations carried out at the terminal, including a full day of technical checks and trial runs yesterday. Palestinian Authority personnel are currently stationed at the crossing, alongside monitors from the European Union.
At this stage, the crossing is only being used for pedestrian passage by Gazan Palestinians, while aid trucks remain barred. The exact number of people who have crossed in or out has not yet been confirmed, though movement is expected to stay limited during the first days.
Travel through Rafah is being handled under a new approval and screening process: Egypt must authorize those wishing to enter or exit, before sending the names to Israel's Shin Bet for security clearance. Israeli forces will supervise departures from Gaza remotely, using facial recognition from a control room to verify travelers and open the gate. Those entering Gaza from Egypt will then undergo an additional Israeli security screening at an IDF checkpoint before continuing into Hamas-controlled areas.
