Italy is evacuating diplomatic personnel from Iran based in part on information received through confidential channels with Washington. Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani chaired a Crisis Unit meeting at the Foreign Ministry on January 26 to assess the situation in Iran following recent protests. Italy's ambassadors to Iran, Israel, the United States, and the EU attended the meeting.
Tajani stated that protecting Italian nationals remains the top priority and ordered a substantial reduction of embassy staff in Iran, who will return to Italy quickly.
The meeting also addressed positions Italy will take in the coming days at the European level regarding sanctions against Iran.
