US President Donald Trump is weighing whether to use force against Iran as the US ramps up its military presence in the region, including the movement of the USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier and additional forces, according to a New York Times report.
The report says Trump has received multiple US intelligence briefings indicating Iran's leadership is increasingly unstable, with the assessment stating that "the Iranian government's hold on power is at its weakest point since the shah was overthrown in the 1979 revolution."
While the Times says no final decision has been made, hawkish advisers have reportedly been urging Trump to act, following the regime's violent suppression of protests that reportedly left thousands dead.
Republican Senator Lindsey Graham, a close Trump ally, told the Times: "The goal is to end the regime," adding, "They may stop killing them today, but if they're in charge next month, they'll kill them then." In a separate post on X, Graham wrote: "History tells us the right decision is to stand by those who stand with America and sacrifice for our common cause," and added, "History also tells us that evil cannot be accommodated - it has to be defeated."
