US President Donald Trump said his proposed Board of Peace "might" replace the United Nations, while insisting he still wants the body to continue, saying, "The UN just hasn't been very helpful," despite having "great potential" that he said it has "never lived up to."
Speaking at a White House press briefing marking his first year in office, Trump also said he was preparing for a "very important call" with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, whom he said he "like\[s\]," a relationship that has raised concern in Jerusalem due to Erdogan's harsh criticism of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Israel's war in Gaza.
During the same briefing, Trump repeated his claim that Iran halted planned executions after warnings from Washington. "They were going to hang 837 people," he said, adding that the US warned Tehran that carrying them out would be "a very bad day for them." Trump said the executions were "supposedly" taken "off the table," though Iran has not publicly confirmed the claim.
Trump also addressed the hostage issue, saying the United States believes it has information on the whereabouts of the body of Ran Gvili, the final deceased hostage, stating, "We think we know" where it is being held in Gaza.
