Earlier Today, Defense Minister Israel Katz convened the Ministerial Committee for Civilian Preparedness and declared 2026-2027 as "critical preparedness years" for earthquakes. Katz instructed the Home Front Command and National Emergency Authority to present a multi-year earthquake response plan within two months.
The committee meeting included National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir, Economy Minister Nir Barkat, Police Commissioner Danny Levi, and Home Front Command chief Major General Shai Kleper. The ministers agreed to clarify the division of responsibilities between the Defense Ministry and National Security Ministry during civilian emergencies to prevent overlap and improve crisis management.
The committee also approved operational measures including upgrading early warning systems, strengthening command and control capabilities, improving coordination between emergency agencies, protecting strategic facilities, and establishing a government framework to assist those left homeless following natural disasters.
