Israeli media report that an incident at an unlicensed daycare operating out of an apartment on Ha'Mem Gimel Street in Jerusalem's Romema neighborhood involved 55 children. Reports now say that two babies, around four months old, have died following the incident. Medics described chaotic scenes, saying they ran in and out of the building carrying multiple infants and toddlers at a time.
Police say the incident did not involve hazardous materials, and investigators are examining whether a faulty or unsafe heating method used inside the apartment may have been responsible. Three caregivers have been detained for questioning. According to Israeli media, the daycare cared for children aged roughly four months to three years and was operating without a license, with the Education Ministry saying it was unaware of the facility's existence and had never been approached regarding licensing.
According to Galatz, the Jerusalem Fire Department's district commander said the babies were found in a separate room, no hazardous substances were located at the scene, and a special investigative team has been established to probe the incident.
