Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian warns that any move against Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei would amount to an act of war, saying such an attack would be treated as a direct confrontation with the Iranian people. Writing on X, Pezeshkian says targeting the country's leader would trigger a full-scale conflict.
His comments follow remarks by US President Donald Trump, who in an interview with Politico described Khamenei as a "sick man" and said it was "time to look for new leadership in Iran," language widely seen as Trump's strongest signal yet in favor of ending Khamenei's rule.
Pezeshkian also accuses Washington and its allies of responsibility for Iran's economic hardship, as unrest that began over living conditions last month escalated into widespread anti-regime protests. Iranian and rights groups have reported that thousands were killed during the crackdown.
