US President Donald Trump has, for the first time, openly suggested Iran needs new leadership, telling Politico, "It's time to look for new leadership in Iran." His comments were directed personally at Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, stopping short of an explicit call for broader regime change.
The remarks came after Trump said he had moved away from the idea of striking Iran, following what he described as the regime's decision to cancel the planned execution of around 800 protesters. Asked about possible military action, Trump said, "The best decision \[Khamenei\] ever made was not hanging more than 800 people two days ago."
Responding to statements by Khamenei blaming the United States for unrest in Iran, Trump accused the supreme leader of destroying his own country through violence, saying, "What he is guilty of, as the leader of a country, is the complete destruction of the country and the use of violence at levels never seen before." He added, "Leadership is about respect, not fear and death."
