US President Donald Trump said Washington would respond forcefully if Tehran carries out executions against people detained during the protests, warning that Iran would face consequences if it follows through on threats to hang demonstrators.
In an interview with CBS News, Trump said he was just learning about the potential use of capital punishment against protesters and stressed that once Iran "starts killing people by the thousands," the United States would not stay on the sidelines. He added that no reliable figures have emerged on the true scale of deaths in the crackdown, saying he had heard conflicting estimates and that the lack of clarity itself was troubling.
Pressed on what outcome he seeks in Iran, Trump said simply that the goal is "to win," while again hinting that Washington is prepared to take "very strong action" should the regime escalate its response to the unrest.
