Chinese media has characterized Iranian requests for security and economic assistance as "pure fantasy," as Beijing delays implementation of an economic agreement signed with Tehran last year. China is concerned that deepening economic ties with Iran could expose Chinese banks and key companies to sanctions. Iranian officials have sought Chinese support amid heightened tensions with the United States and since the end of the 12 day war with Israel.
