By Sammy,
As we reported overnight, UNIFIL alleged that Israeli tank fire endangered its peacekeepers in the south, saying two tanks fired several shells near its forces in what it called a violation of UN Security Council Resolution 1701, though it said no personnel were hurt.
The IDF has rejected that account, stating that its forces were targeting Hezbollah infrastructure in the Khiam area and were not operating in proximity to any UN positions. According to the army, UNIFIL only contacted Israeli officers after the strike had already taken place, requesting that the fire be halted.
The military adds that a preliminary review found no UNIFIL presence in the strike zone at the time, dismissing the claim that peacekeepers were put at risk.
