An Iranian opposition outlet says the recent protest crackdown was far deadlier than any publicly acknowledged figures suggest, claiming internal security assessments put the death toll at around 12,000.
Iran International describes the killings as a coordinated operation, not the result of scattered street clashes, with most of the bloodshed concentrated on the nights of January 8-9. The site alleges that Revolutionary Guards and Basij forces carried out the campaign under orders from Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.
The outlet says it built the estimate by cross-checking information from a wide range of sources, including contacts inside the IRGC, medical staff, eyewitnesses, and individuals with access to the Supreme National Security Council and the presidential office. It adds that the material was reviewed through several verification stages and that most of those killed were under 30, noting that other public tallies so far have placed the number of fatalities in only the hundreds.
