The IDF has not yet provided a comment on an incident in southern Lebanon in which UN peacekeepers say Israeli tanks fired shells that landed close to their patrol, despite advance coordination meant to avoid such encounters.
According to UNIFIL, the tanks moved from an IDF position inside Lebanese territory further into the Sarda area. After peacekeepers used liaison channels to demand the activity stop, three rounds were fired, with two landing about 150 meters from their location. As the patrol withdrew for safety, it reports that the tanks continued tracking them with laser targeting.
The UN force says the armor left the area roughly 30 minutes later and that no personnel were injured. It describes the episode as a serious breach of Resolution 1701 and warns that similar incidents involving clearly identifiable peacekeepers are becoming increasingly frequent.
