Despite the near-total internet shutdown that began on January 8, reporters continue to receive videos and eyewitness accounts through limited satellite links such as Starlink, mostly from major cities. They say that even this narrow flow of information points to continued protests across Iran and an increasingly violent crackdown, although independently verifying the full scale of events remains nearly impossible.
Hospitals, industrial sites and streets are reportedly being turned into makeshift morgues. A doctor in the northern city of Rasht said one hospital alone received around 70 bodies, while footage from Kahrizak south of Tehran shows rows of body bags, with witnesses claiming dozens more are stored in a nearby warehouse. Additional videos from Fardis in Karaj and Alghadir Hospital in eastern Tehran suggest similar scenes in multiple regions, including western provinces such as Ilam and Kermanshah.
Under the communications blackout, only fragments of information are escaping the country, yet those fragments are painting a dire picture. Journalists at Iran International say the material reaching them suggests security forces are using live fire nationwide to suppress demonstrations, with conservative internal estimates indicating that roughly 2,000 people may have been killed in the past 48 hours.
