The United States is carrying out ongoing airstrikes on ISIS targets in Syria, with fighter jets and attack aircraft hitting what officials describe as weapons depots, training camps and other operational infrastructure across central parts of the country. Defense officials say that the current wave of raids is part of a sustained counterterrorism campaign aimed at degrading ISIS's ability to plan and launch attacks, emphasizing that the strikes are focused on preventing the group's resurgence.
The strikes are part of Operation Hawkeye Strike, which was launched and announced on December 19, 2025, after a deadly ISIS-linked ambush near Palmyra that killed two U.S. soldiers and one U.S. civilian interpreter on December 13, 2025. Washington maintains that the mission in Syria is focused on combating ISIS even as regional tensions rise, stressing that there is no intention to expand the air campaign into a broader intervention in Syrian affairs, with CENTCOM Commander Adm. Brad Cooper saying the operation is "critical to preventing ISIS from inspiring terrorist plots and attacks against the U.S. homeland" and vowing, "We will continue to relentlessly pursue terrorists who seek to harm Americans and our partners across the region."
