Israeli defense officials have approved a broad overhaul of the security concept for Eilat, citing what senior military figures described as a credible infiltration threat and an assessment that geographic distance no longer provides sufficient protection. The plan, led by the head of the Operations Directorate and the Southern Command chief, includes the deployment of an additional infantry battalion tasked specifically with defending the city and its surroundings.
Security measures also include a significant expansion of the local counterterrorism unit and its capabilities, the addition of an artillery battery, and increased readiness of armored forces stationed at Shizafon Base for rapid deployment. The military is establishing a dedicated air-attack coordination cell for the area, shortening air response times for strike aircraft, and increasing aerial alert levels.
Defenses around Ramon Airport are being reinforced, alongside strengthened protection for Arava communities through additional ground forces and security assets. Israeli media said the changes mark a fundamental shift in how the southernmost city is defended, reflecting concerns over potential cross-border or long-range threats.
