Uncertainty over who now governs Venezuela deepened Sunday after interim president Delcy Rodríguez accused Israel of masterminding the U.S. raid that resulted in Nicolás Maduro's arrest, calling the operation a "Zionist attack" on the country.
In a nationally televised appearance alongside senior regime figures, Rodríguez insisted that despite his transfer to American custody, Maduro remains Venezuela's only legitimate president. "The attack on Venezuela is Zionist," she declared, offering no evidence, while invoking rhetoric long used by the Chavista leadership to blame Israel and its allies for foreign pressure.
The remarks followed a U.S. military mission in Caracas that captured Maduro and flew him to New York, where he was booked into federal custody, a move President Donald Trump hailed as marking the end of Maduro's rule. At the same time, Venezuela's constitutional court named Rodríguez interim president during Maduro's absence, a role she assumed while standing publicly with National Assembly head Jorge Rodríguez, Interior Minister Diosdado Cabello and Defense Minister Vladimir Padrino López in an apparent show of unity.
