More than 20 drone-based arms-smuggling attempts have been thwarted along the Egyptian border over the past two weeks, as the IDF steps up its efforts to counter a growing reliance on unmanned aircraft by smugglers.
One of the latest incidents unfolded in the early hours of the day, when a drone that had crossed from Egypt into Israel was detected by the air force's newly created aerial control system and subsequently brought down by troops on the ground. The aircraft was carrying a significant weapons shipment, including 20 M-16 rifles and additional firearm components, all of which were transferred to security forces.
The interception marked only the second operational use of the new control centers. In a similar case last week, two drones were located through the same network and downed by an IAF helicopter, a development a senior air force official said highlights a broader shift in Israel's border-defense approach.
As part of this expanded response, the IDF's 80th "Edom" Division is working in coordination with the IAF, while Southern Command has increased the deployment of attack helicopters and other capabilities. At the same time, Paran Regional Brigade forces are carrying out wide-ranging ground activity to bolster defenses along the western border.
