In a report by Kan, it is claimed that rather than waiting for President Isaac Herzog to respond to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's pending pardon request, members of the coalition are now floating the idea of launching a fresh round of talks - with Herzog acting as mediator - to bring the corruption proceedings to an end.
The push follows remarks by US President Donald Trump, who said after meeting Netanyahu that Herzog had told him a pardon was already "on its way," a statement the President's Residence immediately rejected. Netanyahu's attorneys had formally filed for a full presidential pardon about a month earlier, making clear that the request carried no admission of guilt.
The strategy echoes earlier failed attempts to find an exit ramp. In 2022, Netanyahu enlisted former Supreme Court justice Aharon Barak to open plea negotiations with the attorney general, but those efforts collapsed over whether any agreement would force him to step away from political life. Herzog later spent much of 2023 overseeing prolonged talks aimed at bridging gaps over the government's judicial overhaul.
