Iraq said Iranian gas supplies have been fully halted, leading to the loss of between 4,000 and 4,500 megawatts from the national power grid, according to the Iraqi electricity ministry. The ministry said Tehran informed Baghdad of the stoppage, citing unforeseen circumstances, forcing shutdowns and load shedding at power plants.
Iran supplies roughly one-third to 40 percent of Iraq's gas and electricity needs. The halt comes after the Trump administration rescinded a U.S. waiver in March that had allowed Iraq to pay Iran for electricity as part of Washington's renewed "maximum pressure" campaign. A senior U.S. State Department official said the policy relies on diplomatic and economic measures, with no military action planned at this stage.
